Overview

Short Tour Description

This e-bike route will take you along some spectacular seaside and inland trails within the Emporda and Costa Brava region. Not only will this trail enable you to embrace the wonders of the natural environment around you, but it will include visits to three museums in the area, allowing you to also enjoy the beautiful works of art that Catalonia has to offer. These three museums form the three corners of the famous Dalí Triangle!

During this tour, as you uncover this region you will also discover more about the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, and the sources of inspiration for his work and persona. You will be mesmerised by the charming villages and abundant coastal views as you pass through Cap de Creus, the Empordanet meadows and the delightful trails that wind around the hills of Montgrí. Salvador and Gala Dalí were fascinated by this landscape and you will understand why as we travel through this glorious and scenic area. The uphill climbs on this active tour can be enjoyed with the help of our electric bicycles.

Whether you prefer to head off completely independently on a self-guided experience or join a group with an expert guide, the Dalí tour is ideal for single and solo cyclists! Travelling alone is a great way to meet new people especially when doing something that you love! Cycling with a mix of surrealistic art – could there be a better combination?

Recommendation

Girona has a fascinating old town and you will really enjoy a wander around this medieval labyrinth. The Cathedral here has the widest Gothic style nave in the world. We also recommend that you take a tour of the old city walls, it is a strenuous climb on hot summer day, but definitely worthwhile!

The Dalí Triangle

Tour Route

Day 1: Girona

Arrival and spend your first night of the tour in the medieval city of Girona, which hides a spectacular old neighbourhood, with a truly outstanding Cathedral and one of the best preserved old Jewish quarters in Spain. The quaint, coloured riverside houses and the Gustav Eiffel bridge are a must see in this captivating city.

Day 2: From Les Gavarres range to the Emporda meadow

Leaving Girona, you will travel uphill with the e-bikes to the Els Angels sanctuary, where Salvador and Gala Dalí formalised their marriage at the Catholic Church in a very intimate ceremony. The panorama views at the top are marvellous. The route continues through the timeworn villages of Les Gavarres, to the first stop on the Dalí Triangle: The Castle of Pubol. The castle was a present from Salvador to his wife Gala, and here she created a surrealist home to isolate herself from the world. Following the pathways towards the grasslands which have sprung up alongside the River Ter, we move into the area known as Empordanet. This area is sprinkled with medieval gems and you will feel like you are stepping back in time! Dolors, your landlady for the night will be waiting for you in Peratallada, a fabulous village cut from stone. Here, every nook and cranny have a hidden story to tell! You will enjoy a well-deserved break after an intense beginning to your journey!

Km: 36 km approx.
Ascent: 900 m approx.

Day 3: Montgrí as a backdrop

Your second e-cycling journey will take you around the hills of Montgrí, from the lower (Baix) Emporda to the higher (Alt) Emporda region. Rice field and Masies (typical ancient farm houses from the Catalan countryside) will surround you on your way. Take a good look at the sinuous shape of the unusual and somewhat enchanting range of hills within Montgrí. The question that has puzzled locals for generations, is what do you see? Is it a woman or a bishop laying-down? The meadows of Alt Emporda open ahead of you and with the Pyrenees Mountains as a backdrop, you cannot help but ride with a smile on your face! This area is covered with marshland and has been a National Park, named Aiguamolls, since the 1980s. It is a peaceful spot and a place of refuge for migrating birds. An ancient Masia will be your sanctuary for the night here. After a long day, you will be quietly serenaded to sleep by the chirping of frogs and cricket song outside your window.

Km: 44 km approx.
Ascent: 300m approx.

Day 4: Dalí Theatre-Museum

Let´s get surreal! Your e-bikes will bring you to Figueres, the hometown of Salvador Dalí. It is here that his last and greatest work of art is located: the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The life and work of Dalí are presented throughout this museum, which is considered to be one large surrealist work of art. You will have the chance to take a guided tour, which should be pre-booked, particularly during the summer months. During the afternoon, you will weave your way through the maze of rural trails, open fields and postcard-perfect villages that lie ahead of you on your way to Perelada.

Km: 34 km approx.
Ascent: 125 m approx.

Day 5: Across the Verdera mountain range

Vineyards and Mediterranean maquia (Mediterranean bush) will surround as you enjoy the uphill push of your e-bikes on the way to the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. The views here are simply astonishing and might just blow you away! The descent from the monastery is even more enjoyable and with the Mediterranean Sea in the background, you will arrive at the fishing village of Port de la Selva. This is definitely one of the best spots on the Costa Brava!

Km: 28 km approx.
Ascent: 900 m approx.

Day 6: Paradise at Cap de Creus

With today’s ride you will move closer to the eastern point of the Iberian Peninsula, pedalling through this rough and rocky landscape. You will enjoy the windblown shapes created within the rockfaces here and marvel at the stunning geology of the Pyrenees Mountains within the Cap de Creus peninsula. These rocks spoke to Dalí and in them he found inspiration for his portraits. At the end of age-old mule track you will arrive in Portlligat. Many years ago, Dalí and Gala bought a fisherman’s shack here and made a home to enjoy. Today this unique house is a museum and the third corner of the Dalí Triangle that you will visit. You will spend the night in Cadaqués, a wonderous village tucked away in a natural harbour, sheltered by the Pyrenean foothills. The whitewashed, traditional architecture that you will see here has been retained for generations - it will almost feel like you are stepping back in time!

Km: 30 km approx.
Ascent: 900 m approx.

Day 7: Gulf of Roses

Surrounded by olive trees and Mediterranean maquia, you will cross sprawling hills and continue e-cycling alongside the coastline. You will enjoy extensive vistas, with a spectacular view of the Bay of Roses below. It will surprise you how far you can see from up here! You will take a much-needed stop to enjoy a tasty lunch at a small beach, below the shade of pine trees. Diving into the sea here is highly recommended! After a long day of cycling and an adventurous holiday, you will let the week come to a close in style. You will spend your final night at a gorgeous guest house and enjoy the splendid outdoor swimming pool!

Km: 33 km approx.
Ascent: 1200 m approx.

Day 8: See you soon!

You will say goodbye to the spectacular region of Emporda. We really hope that you will have loved and enjoyed this place as much as Dalí did.
Transfers to the airport or a local train station to meet your preference.

Information & Services

Character

The Dalí Triangle is a tour with varied terrain. You ride your e-bikes over rolling farmland to the sea, finishing at Cap de Creus, a rocky and unspoilt peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea. The landscape changes throughout the tour; with lively cycling days dominating the beginning of the route. Towards the end of the tour, rugged hilly and coastal mountain ranges will dominant the surroundings.

This tour involves mainly e-bike touring. Even with the help of the e-bikes on some of the steep uphill climbs, this tour does require a reasonable level of fitness. This route includes both gravel and asphalt tracks. While on the Cap de Creus peninsula you will cycle along more difficult paths, which will require you to control your bicycle on uneven surfaces. These more challenging stretches have resulted in this tour being determined as a moderate-level tour. Some days you will be able to choose between a longer and a shorter alternative, depending on your desire to pedal on that particular day! Following in Dalí’s footsteps on e-bike will be a superb adventure! We hope that you will leave Catalonia with a sense of fond admiration for this celebrated artist and his homeland!

Important notices to all customers!

All tour itineraries are general guidelines and in order to offer our customers the best e-cycling holiday experience we make occasional changes. The number of daily kilometres and metres of ascent are approximate as we offer different options on most of the days of the tour. For example, sometimes you can choose between a longer or a shorter route and sometimes between easy and more challenging paths to suit your preferences.

Depending on the number of simultaneous tours, the season, the weather and national holidays, we may make alterations to the itineraries at short-notice, which could affect the number of hours of e-cycling per day, the route we take to any given destination or the use of alternative accommodation. Tours can also be cycled in both directions. All changes are at our discretion, but when changes are made, we endeavour to ensure that our high quality standards are maintained and reflected in the alternatives that we choose.
